16 soldiers may have been killed by mercenaries and not Nigerians – Akpabio

Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President has hinted that the killers of the 16 soldiers in Delta State may not really be Nigerians but foreign mercenaries.

About 16 Nigerian Army personnel on a peace mission to Okuama community in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State were attacked by armed men on Thursday, March 14, killing them in the process.

Akpabio had opined that those who killed the soldiers may be mercenaries while speaking on a debate on two merged motions by Senators Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, APC, Katsina Central, and Edeh Dafinone, APC, Delta Central on Tuesday.

He said, “We are not at war. I don’t think they are from the Niger Delta. They may be mercenaries.”

The Senate Committee on Defence, Army, Navy, and Air Force has been tasked by the red chamber to probe into the killings by liaising with the Military authorities to get more information on the remote and immediate cause of what it described as “a dastardly act.”

While observing a one minute silence for those killed, the Senate tasked the Federal Government to ensure they fish out those who had committed such an heinous crime and bring them to book.
