The just concluded Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards which held on Sunday, June 25, witnessed the smashing performance of Nigeria’s recording artiste Adedamola Adefolahan popularly known by his stage name, Fireboy DML.

The 26 year old music artiste currently signed to rapper, Olamide’s YBNL record label revealed at the show that Nigerians make the best ‘Afrobeats’ music genre globally.

Afrobeats, which is also alternately referred to as Afropop is a wide term used in describing the popular music genre from Africa and abroad.

It is common knowledge that the genre initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the United Kingdom in the 90s, 2000s and 2010s, but the current domination of the genre by Nigerian artistes knows no rival.

When asked by a presenter why most singers performing Afrobeats presently are of Nigerian descent, the singer responded by citing the large population of the country as one of the major influencing factors for such, also adding that Nigerian artistes are better.

In his words: “Afrobeats is getting more recognition and [my performance] is just super proof of that. The influence of Afrobeats right now is coming from Nigeria because we make the best Afrobeats music,” the singer said.

“And I think it’s a lot of people, over 200 million. There’s so much talent out there too. Also, as Nigerians, we love to excel wherever we find ourselves. So we go all out. I mean, big ups to every other country but we make the best.”

His breathtaking performance at the event saw him opening with his smash hit, ‘Playboy’ before going on to perform his Internationally single, ‘peru’. The award event saw other Nigerian artistes Wizkid and Tems winnig best collaborations.
