Adeshina shatters 14-year old high jump record in U.S

History was made yesterday, by Nigeria-US based high jumper, Temitope Adeshina, who set a new national high jump record in the United States. Her performance outclassed the initial record held by Doreen Amata since 2016.

In her second appearance in competitive meets in the U.S. yesterday, the Nigerian, who joined the Texas Tech School athletics team in 2023, cleared the height of 1.96m to erase Amata’s 1.93m indoor and 1.95 outdoor records at the Corky Classic in Texas.

Adeshina, was one of Nigeria’s hopefuls at the World Championships last year in Budapest but missed the game. She has held an outstanding performance of 1.83m which ranks her high and prepared to face face bigger competitive games.

Her current form schedules her as a potential hopeful at the Paris 2024 Olympics. However, her recent record presents a tougher challenge for her in the forthcoming Olympics qualification which has a higher standard.

Adeshina aachieved 1.85m at the Corky Classic, and followed up with 1.88m before landing the big jump of 1.96.

She attracted the admiration of the President of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Chief Tonobok Okowa who spoke worthy of her performance. He was enthralled that Adeshina is fast becoming a force to reckon with in the world.

“It’s a heart-warming performance by Adeshina. It’s a world-class performance and I am banking on her to improve on that record.

“It’s a sign of good things to come as we prepare for the Africa Games in Ghana and the Olympics in Paris, Okowa stated.
