Akpabio records victory over Yari, clinches Senate President

In a contest of two powerful members of the All Progressives Congress (APC), for the position of President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio has emerged victorious over former governor of Zamfara State, Abdul-Azeez Yari.

The former governor of Akwa-Ibom State defeated his former Zamfara counterpart to become the President of the 10th National Assembly, Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a landslide victory, Akpabio garnered 63 votes, defeating Yari, who managed to secured 46 votes.

The party’s National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsed Akpabio to become the next Senate President, a decision that did’t go well with some of the party members, who insisted they will contest against the the decision of the party.

Yari who is one of the aggrieved Senators contested against the party’s candidate, however, his political strength didn’t have sufficient muscles to defeat his main rival, Akpabio.

In a similar endorsement, the party also favoured Tajudeen Abass for the position of the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

The voting exercise ended at 9:15 am amidst the participation of 109 senators.

Akpabio was part of the Muhammadu Buhari government as a Minister of Niger Delta Affairs. The former governor had rough feathers with the National Assembly over the NDDC contract brouhaha
