Former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Obot Akpabio, has been administered the oath of office as the Senate President 10th National Assembly.

Akpabio, a former minister of Niger Delta Affairs, garnered 63 votes to trounce, the former governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari, who managed to receive 46 votes.

Akpabio is the party candidate and the preferred choice of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who refused all influence to drop the anointed candidate.

Recall that he resigned as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs  on 11 May 2022 on the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari to contest in the presidential primaries of the All Progressives Congress. He later stepped down for Tinubu a few minutes before voting.

After clinching the position of Senate President, Akpabio was administered the  oath of office as a member of the Senate and as President of the Senate.

The election of the Deputy Senate President might likely follow the Akpabio-way as Senator Barau is still the party’s choice, so also the Speaker of the House – both are anointed men of the Presidency.
