Army hands over suspected killer of abducted FUNAAB student to police

The Nigerian Army has handed over Adeleye Ayomide, the suspect accused of killing Idowu Christiana, a 200-level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), to the Lagos State Police Command. Christiana was abducted along the Ikorodu-Yaba Road in Lagos State on August 19, 2024, and her abductors initially demanded a ransom of N3 million, which was later negotiated to N350,000. Despite receiving the ransom, the abductors killed Christiana, and her body was buried. The suspect, Ayomide, was arrested by the Nigerian Army and confessed to the crime. The case has sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for justice for Christiana using the hashtag #JusticeForChristiana.

The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed receipt of the suspect, Adeleye Ayomide, from the Nigerian Army and has commenced further investigation into the matter.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Muyiwa Adejobi, “The suspect is currently in our custody, and we are conducting a thorough investigation to ensure that justice is served. We will leave no stone unturned to unravel the circumstances surrounding Christiana’s abduction and murder.”

The family of the deceased has expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army for their role in apprehending the suspect and to the Lagos State Police Command for their efforts in ensuring that justice is served.

Christiana’s mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Adesina, said, “We are relieved that the suspect has been arrested, and we hope that he will face the full weight of the law. We want justice for our daughter, and we will not rest until we get it.”

The case has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with many calling for greater efforts to address the rising incidence of kidnapping and violence in the country.

The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, has also issued a statement condemning the murder of Christiana and calling for justice to be served.

The university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Felix Salako, said, “We are deeply saddened by Christiana’s murder, and we demand justice for her and her family. We will continue to work with the authorities to ensure that our students are safe and secure.”
