In a dramatic turn of events, the Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Ahmed Abubakar, have been relieved of their duties following a protest against bad governance in the country.
The protest, which was led by a coalition of civil society organizations and human rights groups, called for an end to corruption, economic hardship, and insecurity in the country. The protesters also demanded the resignation of top security chiefs, whom they accused of failing to address the country’s security challenges.
According to sources, the decision to sack the DSS and NIA bosses was taken by President Muhammadu Buhari during an emergency meeting with top government officials.
“The President was unhappy with the way the DSS and NIA handled the protest,” said a source. “He felt that they should have done more to prevent the protest from getting out of hand.”
The removal of the DSS and NIA bosses has been hailed by many as a victory for the protesters and a sign that the government is willing to listen to the demands of the people.
“This is a victory for democracy and a sign that the government is willing to hold its officials accountable,” said a civil society leader. “We hope that this will mark the beginning of a new era of transparency and accountability in government.”
