The issue regarding the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) cash withdrawal policy in the Senate has been postponed till 14th December 2022
The postponement was due to the absence of Senator Uba Sani, the Chairman of the Committee on Banking and Finance.
Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi, a member of the Committee in a Point of Order on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, explained that the report which was to be presented at the plenary had to be withheld because Sani is away for the All Progressive Congress (APC) rally in Kaduna.
Given the above reason, the Senate President Ahmad Lawan, urged lawmakers to be patient as the findings of the Committee would be unveiled within 24 hours.
In similar vain, another lawmaker, Senator Bulkachuwa Muhammed, insisted that the Senate should play down the issue because of its importance to the economic stability of the country. He also noted that the House of Representatives invited the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele to appear before the House to throw more light on the new cash withdrawal policy.
Senator Uba is expected to present to the floor of the senate details and result concerning the screening of Edward Adamu and Aisha Ahmad as deputy governors of the CBN.
Recall the federal government’s change of currency and the directives of the Central Bank of Nigeria to all financial institutions to limit all withdrawals to a paltry sum of N20, 000, which has unsettled a lot of people, especially politicians , as the the 2023 elections get closer.
The CBN had last week, pegged daily maximum withdrawals via Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and Point Of Sale (PoS) terminals at N20,000.
