The outbreak of cholera in two Local Government Areas ( LGAs) in Cross River State has panicked the government of Cross River State to swiftly move to contain the spread of the disease.

Obubura and Biase local government had confirmed cases of cholera, according to the Cross River Commissioner for Health, Dr Henry Ayuk, who disclosed the discovery of the disease to the public in Calabar.

The Ministry has set up an Emergency Operation Centre, headed by the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Blessing Ekpenyong, to respond to the threat and coordinate the operations to contain the spread of the disease whilst also ensuring that patients get prompt attention.

According to Ayuk: “Response commodities, including drugs donated by the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) are being put in place by the Surveillance Unit and Logistic Management Coordinating Unit of the state Ministry of Health would be sent to the affected wards.

“The LGA’s Rapid Response Team has already been deployed to affected wards for case investigation and line listing of reported cases, to contain the spread of the disease,” he said.

Ayuk blamed the occurrence of the disease on dirty environment and unhealthy food lifestyle, advising the public to adhere strictly to all measures.

He advised people of the state to desist from eating unripe fruits, contaminated foods and avoid drinking all kinds of water – from unclean wells, ponds and exposed rain water.
