The junta countries whom are amongst the founding members of the commission in 1975 have already been suspended from the bloc in their refusal to return to democratic rule. They announced that it was a sovereign decision to withdraw.

The three countries had jointly stated in a read out broadcast, that ECOWAS had ” drifted from the ideals of its founding fathers and the spirit of Pan-Africanism.”

Further, the three countries had accused ECOWAS of inhumane sanctions to reverse the coups, while ECOWAS maintained that it was working within their powers to return the three countries to democratic rule.

“Burkina Faso, Niger, and Mali remain important members of the Community and the Authority remains committed to finding a negotiated solution to the political impasse,” the statement read.

“The ECOWAS Commission remains seized with the development and shall make further pronouncements as the situation evolves.”

The military coups which took place in Niger July, Burkina Faso in 2022 and Mali in 2020, had caused relations deterioration between the countries and the commission.
