Okupe released by EFFC, apologizes for the errest

The former Director-General (DG) of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), Doyin Okupe, has been freed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on whose instance he was arrested by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Okupe was arrested at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, on Thursday, January 12, 2023, when he was about to board a Virgin Atlantic flight to London, by operatives of the DSS. at the , morning, on his way to London.

Okupe posted on his twitter handle of his release from the custody of the EFCC and said that officials of the agency later apologized to him, attributing his arrest to an error.

The former Director-General (DG) of the Labour Party PCC said he was arrested and detained on his way to the UK for medical check up, according to him : “years after my passport had been withheld by the FHC Abuja”.

He said his arrest was an error and some senior officials in the agency had apologized for the wrongful arrest.

A source said that the politician was asked by the DSS to provide court processes where he paid the fine option following his money laundering conviction by the Federal High Court (FHC), Abuja, recently.

Failure on his part to tender the requested document, men of the Service handed him over to the EFCC. The Spokesman of the Service, Peter Afunanya, had confirmed Okupe arrest but said his arrest was at EFFC’s instance.

On December 19, 2022, Okupe was sentenced to two and a half years imprisonment for breaching the Money Laundering Act. The DSS said his rearrest is connected to his conviction at the court.
