French fashion designer Thierry Mugler dies at aged 73

The death of French fashion designer Thierry Mugler has been announced by his representatives, age 73

The death of Thiery Mugler, an iconic designer known for broad shoulders and sharp tailoring has been announced.

According to his agent, he died of natural causes.

The designer who got his iconic design inspiration from 1940s and 50s glamour had his designs worn by notable stars, like David Bowie and Lady Gaga, Beyonce and Kim Kardashian, for her famous “wet dress” for the Met Gala.

Thierry Mugler upscaled his fashion brand into perfumes, amongst his most famous are Angel and Alien.

The confirmation of his passaged was officially announced on via Mugler’s Facebook account, saying: “We are devastated to announce the passing of Mr Manfred Thierry Mugler on Sunday January 23rd 2022.”

Also his Instagram page posted a tribute on him as “a visionary whose imagination… empowered people around the world to be bolder and dream bigger every day.”

Manfred Thierry Mugler was born in 1948 in Strasbourg, France. The designer was dancer with he was a dancer with the Ballet du Rhin, a talented performer who took to acrobatic at a tender age, and later a fashion modeling.

With an early interest in making his own clothes, Mugler’s interest in fashion design found its footing when the designer opened his first boutique 1970, in the city of Paris.

In his recent interview with Women’s Wear Daily, he said, “I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, but fashion took off for me very quickly in Paris as soon as I showed my sketches.”

Mugler was celebrated for top-notch artistic designs emphasis body features – the hips and shoulders, with plunging necklines and constricted waists.

Amongst notable stars who have worn Mugler’s designs are: Sharon Stone, David Bowie, Rihanna and George Michael. Mugler’s connection with Bowie was so strong that he dressed him for his wedding to Iman.

Mugler sold the rights to his name to Clarins in 1997, several years after launching his perfume Angel, with the brand.

Said to have been a recluse, he appeared to retire from fashion in the early 2000s, choosing to create one-off pieces for Lady Gaga and work as the creative advisor on Beyoncé’s I Am… Sasha Fierce world tour in 2010.

The singer honoured the designer on her website with a montage of the many creations he made for her over the years, with the caption: “Rest in Peace, Thierry Mugler.”

Mugler’s agent told AFP that he had been planning to announce new collaborations this week.

People from the fashion world have paid tribute to Mugler on social media since his death was announced.

Fashion designer Brian Atwood said he was a “constant inspiration”.

Actress and model Irina Shayk has decided to honour Mugler by posting pictures of herself with designer on her Instagram. She penned a tribute, saying: “Gone too soon… you’ll always be missed.”
Mugler’s death has attracted tributes from many stars, such as Brigitte Nielsen, Models Bella Hadid, Winnie Harlow and Heidi Klum.
Brigitte Nielsen commented on the the designers death, expressing her deep sympathy, “Such an icon. Unbelievably sad,” she said.

Black-ish star Tracee Ellis Ross described Mugler as a “defining force in fashion… even his archive collection today seems futuristic.”

Paying tribute to Mugler, Kourtney Kardashian, posted a picture on her Instagram story of her famous family all dressed in Mugler’s designs.

According to Kristin Davis – “another horrible loss” of “visionary Thierry Mugler”, while actress Vanessa Hudgens wrote: “No one did it like he did.”
