Ghana: Controversial E-Levy bill gets the nod of parliament despite rejection

ACCRA -(TVAFRINET) – The controversial E-Levy bill receives approval from Ghana’s parliament amidst rejection from the opposition.

The new tax on electronic transactions bill was highly contest. 

The E-levy bill recommends a 1.5 per cent taxation on electronic money transfers.

Ghana’s President, Nana Akufo-Addo’s claim it will help raise over 900 million dollars and address the problems of unemployment and high public debt. But for some Ghanaians, the tax represents an additional burden on top of the high cost of living with fuel prices rising following the russian invasion of Ukraine.

The parliamentary vote was jettisoned by members of the opposition, who walked out of the assembly in anger, describing the tax as inconsiderate.
