Obasanjo says he is fine being a statesman, not a politician
ABUJA, Nigeria (TVAFRINET) – Former Nigeria President Olusegun Obasanjo has said to leaders of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, he is no longer interested in partisan politics and does not wish to belong to any political party any more.
The former president’s position was a response to the courtesy call visit on him by PDP chieftains on Saturday, January 22, 2022, at his residence in Abeokuta.
The National Chairman of the opposition party, Iyorcha Ayu and five ex-governors of the party: Sule Lamido, Olusegun Mimiko, Liyel Imoke, and Donald Duke, as well as Peter Obi and some party chieftains visited the former president at his resident in Abeokuta.
In Obasanjo’s remark to the party leaders: “I’m no longer in partisan politics and there is nothing that can bring me back. Anybody who wants my advice, I will always be there in the best interest of Nigeria.
“Whatever I do in my own life…because I became president on the platform of PDP, PDP will continue to be part of my life. Since the day I tore my PDP card, that was the day I ceased to be a member of PDP. That day I vowed not to be a member of any political party.
“I will continue to be a statesman.”
In his response, Ayu told Obasanjo that “if you leave PDP, the blood of PDP will never leave you.”
The PDP party Chairman told Obasanjo that the party will depend on his fatherly advice on all matters of governance in Nigeria.
