INEC targets February 2024 for bye-elections to fill legislative vacancies

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) proposes Thursday, February 1st, 2024, as the date for a bye-election. The decision emanates from the necessity to fill the gaps left by court orders, resignations, and unfortunate fatalities in the legislature.

In a recent meeting with political party leaders, INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, provided an insight into the upcoming electoral undertakings.

Professor Yakubu revealed that the judiciary, following the conclusion of legal heads, it was agreed that the commission organise rerun elections across 34 federal and state constituencies.

According to the INEC chief, the bye-election is to cover one senatorial seat, 11 federal constituencies, and 22 state constituencies awaiting representation.
