This unique ice coffee is originated in Algeria. The name supposedly derives from “Mazagran” a port city in Algeria that was granted to France by the Treaty of Tafna in 1837. Mazagran can be also described as “the original iced coffee”.
This African iced coffee can be made in several ways such as in the Portuguese versions which is made with espresso, lemon, mint, and rum, and the Austrian versions is served with an ice cube and include rum. Sometimes a fast version is achieved by pouring a previously sweetened espresso into a cup with ice cubes and a slice of lemon.
Often dubbed as the original ice coffee, mazagran consists of strong coffee that is poured over ice. lemon juice was originally added to improve the flavor of low-end coffee beans The drink is usually served in a tall, narrow glass or an eponymous glass made from porcelain or clay.
