The death toll from the collapse of a landfill in Kampala has risen to 34.

The landslide buried many residents and homes in the Kiteezi neighborhood under a massive pile of waste following heavy rains.

The landslide occurred on Saturday, August 9, and rescue efforts continue, though 35 people remain missing.

The collapse is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall.

The Kiteezi landfill is on a steep slope in an impoverished part of the city.

Women and children who scavenge plastic waste for income frequently gather there, and some homes have been built close to the landfill.

Kampala authorities for years have considered closing the site and commissioning a larger area outside the city as a waste disposal site.

It was not clear why the plan has failed to take off since 2016.

Chinese firm releases one presidential jet for Tinubu’s meeting with Macron after confiscation

0

Following the reports of a Chinese firm, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, obtaining a court judgement against Nigeria, which led to the confiscation of the country’s presidential jets, a new development has it that one of the seized presidential jets was released, prior to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu‘s scheduled meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron early next week.

The Chinese company released the Airbus A330 detained in France, after it had secured a court order to confiscate three Nigerian presidential jets with over $74.5 million in debt.

The development was confirmed by Zhongshan’s spokesperson on Friday, August 16, highlighting the company’s commitment to acting reasonably.

The company has consistently sought to act reasonably and fairly in the course of a legal dispute with Nigeria which was not of its making.

“It has now been made aware that the aircraft is needed for the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to travel to a scheduled meeting with President Macron of France,” the spokesperson stated, according to Premium Times.

As a goodwill gesture, the company lifted the seizure to facilitate President Tinubu’s trip.

The spokesperson added that Zhongshan remains open to further discussions with the Nigerian government to resolve the ongoing dispute swiftly and amicably.

It was earlier reported that a US appellate court has upheld the $70 million arbitration award against the Nigerian government in it’s dispute with Chinese company Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial.

It was gathered that the ruling further complicates the Nigerian government’s efforts to contain the fallout from an international dispute that has already led to the attempted seizure of Nigerian assets in Europe.

The ruling also gave the Chinese firm powers to impose final charging orders on two residential properties owned by Nigeria in the United States.

Ondo Government offsets ₦3.2 billion gratuity payment to 2015 retirees

0

The Ondo State Government has began the disbursement of ₦3.2 billion outstanding gratuity to retirees in the state.

Speaking at the event in Akure, Gov. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, said that the ₦3.2 billion disbursement would offset the total gratuity owed to the 2015 retirees under the State Pension Scheme.

Aiyedatiwa said out of the amount, ₦1 billion would be used to offset the gratuity of local government 2012 and 2013 retirees, while ₦2.2 billion would be used to offset the 2015 gratuity of state pensioners.

“Our well-conceived approach to gratuity payment is to tackle the frightening arrears which has, more or less, made our respectable retirees to lose hope.

“By this sure and steady mode of bulk payment, all retirees should rest assured that sooner than later, the backlog of gratuities would be fully paid.

“We consider this a duty, despite other pressing financial commitments of government and the limited resources available,” the governor said.

He promised that his administration would continue to provide basic infrastructure for the people of the state.

“As our finances improve, more special interventions will be made to gradually defray the backlog of arrears of subsequent years, God willing.

“Let me therefore, appeal to other retirees who are yet to have their turn, to be patient with the government, as they will be taken care of as soon as possible,” Aiyedatiwa stated.

Earlier, Amidu Takuro, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, appreciated the governor for paying the outstanding gratuity.

Takuro, while acknowledging the hardships retirees in the state are facing, highlighted the governor’s concerns for their well-being. The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) in the States, Johnson Osunyemi, also commended the governor for paying the outstanding gratuity.

One of the beneficiaries, Adedayo Ajayi, thanked the governor for paying the outstanding gratuity.
