Tinubu to receive Kekere-Ekun’s name from CJN

0

Today (Friday) President Bola Tinubu, will receive the name of Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, from the National Judicial Council, for his approval as the next Chief Justice of Nigeria.

This is the next step following her recommendation by the NJC on Thursday, during its 106th meeting, which was presided over by the outgoing Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who made the recommendation that her name be sent to the President for appointment as the country’s next CJN.

The NJC Director of Information, Soji Oye, disclosed to The PUNCH that since the meeting had already been concluded, the next step was sending Justice Kekere-Ekun’s name to the President for approval.

He said, “The meeting just finished today, so tomorrow is when My Lord’s name will be taken to the President for his approval of her as the next CJN.”

This is imperative as Justice  Ariwoola will formally bow out of office as the CJN on Thursday, August 22, 2024.

If approved by the President, Justice Kekere-Ekun will become the second female CJN in Nigeria, the first being Justice Mariam Mukhtar, who held the position from July 2012 to November 2014.

Meanwhile, NJC, also at its Thursday meeting, made recommendations of 27 others as judges of state high courts and one Khadi, whose names would be forwarded to their various state governors and the President for approval.

“The council also recommend 27 candidates for appointment as judges of states’ courts and a candidate for appointment as Kadi of the Sharia Court of the FCT, Abuja to their various state governors and Mr. President,” Oye said.

All recommended candidates are expected to be sworn in after the approval of the President and their respective state governors.

Six of the candidates are for the Kwara State High Court. They are Olawoyin Olabisi, Abdulrazaq Funsho, Folorunsho Muritala, Dikko Adebayo, Adeniyi Adenike and Osuolale-Ajayi Olalekan.

Don’t give excuses and I wont accept failures – Wike tasks new FCTA appointees

0

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has tasked newly appointed Mandate Secretary, Youth Development Secretariat, and Permanent Secretaries to deliver on their mandate without excuses, as failures would not be acceptable.

Wike, who gave the warning during the inauguration of the appointees in Abuja on Thursday, advised any of them who lack the capacity to deliver to resign.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report that Abdullahi Ango was inaugurated as the pioneer Mandate Secretary, Youth Development Secretariat of the FCT Administration.

Those inaugurated as Permanent Secretaries include Joy Okeke from the South East, Rotimi Ajayi from the South West, and Nancy Nathan from the North East.

Additionally, Gardiya Bawa was inaugurated as Solicitor General/Permanent Secretary for the Legal Services Secretariat of the FCTA.

Wike emphasised that he would not tolerate any excuses for failures, stressing that every appointee must work and account for any assignment given to them.

He specifically advised Ango to work in the interest of the youths and initiate programmes that would transform them into entrepreneurs.

This, he said, would enable the FCTA to help the youths reduce the hardship they face due to the current economic downturn.

“President Bola Tinubu has fulfilled his part. It is up to you to work with us, work with me, and identify programmes that can make the youth entrepreneurial.

“This will help the youths reduce the effects of hardship and if anything goes wrong, you will be held responsible.”

Wike also charged the Permanent Secretaries to be committed, stressing that he was not interested in mere eye service, but in those willing to work to achieve President Tinubu’s mandate.

“I am sure today you are satisfied that you are almost at the highest level of your career. The only level you may now want to reach is the Head of Civil Service.

“It is up to you to be committed and work hard. If you know you have no capacity to work, it is better you resign now, at least you will leave with the emoluments of a former Permanent Secretary.

“Everybody must know that you must account for every assignment given to you.”

Children and women amongst many deaths in Gaza as number of the dead rises beyond 40,000

0

A total of 40000 victims have so far been killed, much of the dead children and women, in Gaza, according to the health officials in the territory.

The small, densely populated strip of land is now packed with bodies.

Those killed by the war are considered ritually pure under Islamic tradition, so their bodies are not washed, he said. Workers cover the damaged bodies in plastic to avoid bloodstains on their white shrouds.

Families gather to pray in the yard of the health unit, where the bodies wrapped in white clothes by al-Zuriei and his co-workers are put on the ground next to each other before being taken to the cemetery.

The Israeli Hamas war has now lasted 11 months and talks are now underway to reach a ceasefire.

The offensive has left a swath of destruction across the territory and driven the vast majority of Gaza’s 2.3 million people from their homes, often multiple times.

Diplomats hope it would persuade Iran and Lebanon’s Hezbollah to hold off on retaliating for the killing of a top Hezbollah commander in an Israeli- airstrike in Beirut and of Hamas’ top political leader in an explosion in Tehran.

Successive evacuation orders and military operations have driven hundreds of thousands of people into a so-called humanitarian zone along the coast where they live in crowded tent camps with few services.

Aid groups have struggled to deliver food and supplies, prompting warnings of famine.

“One of the outcomes of today’s meeting, of which I’m very proud and committed to, is the new defense agreement signed between Somalia and Egypt, in front of us today,” Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud added.

Police terminate kidnapper in gun battle, recover weapons in Delta

The Police Command in Delta says it has neutralised a member of a kidnap syndicate and recovered the gang’s weapons.

The command’s spokesman, SP Bright Edafe, disclosed this to newsmen in Warri on Wednesday. Edafe said the deceased was neutralised by the command’s special squad, based in Ughelli, during a gun duel with the suspected hoodlums.

He said the incident occurred on Monday, adding that the suspect was rushed to the hospital where he later died.

“On August 12, 2024, operatives of the Special Squad of the Commissioner of Police (CP), Olufemi Abaniwonda, which is based in Ughelli, on investigation alongside a suspected kidnapper, earlier arrested on July 18, came under attack at Ewu Community in Ughelli area.

“The suspected gun runner, who supplies the gang arms for their kidnapping operations, launched the attack in a bid to free his colleagues.

“But the hoodlums were overpowered by the police as some fled with bullet injuries into the bush, while the deceased, hit during the gun duel, was taken to General Hospital, Ughelli, where he later died in the course of treatment,” he said.

18 die in 3 crashes on Lagos-Ibadan expressway within 5 days – FRSC

0

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun has said that 18 persons died in three separate road crashes within five days on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

NAN learnt that the accidents, which occurred between Friday and Tuesday, also left six other persons with various degrees of injuries.

She attributed the accidents to speeding, wrongful overtaking, and the lack of adequate rest, leading to fatigue, among other factors.

“The FRSC is appealing to motorists to maintain the stipulated speed and refrain from wrongful overtaking to stem road crashes on the highway.

“In addition, they should take adequate rest to avoid fatigue, which may result in sleeping off on the wheels thus leading to accidents,” Okpe stated.

She advised motorists to always ensure regular checks on their vehicles to correct defects that could lead to avoidable vehicular malfunction and accidents.
