Former Nigeria military head of state kicks against fuel price hike by government

Fuel price increase will further deepen the hardship and cost of goods and services in the country, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar warns government.

Former Head of State, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (retd.) has cautioned the Federal Government of Nigeria against an increase in the price of petroleum considering the current economic hardship in the country.

He said this on Thursday, January 20, 2022, while speaking at the 19th Daily Trust Dialogue in Abuja.

Recall that the National Economic Council had recently recommended that fuel price be pegged at N302 per litre, invariably removing the controversial petroleum subsidy entirely.

The fuel price increase tension in country could be attributed to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) pressure on the government of Nigeria to remove fuel and electricity subsidies completely in 2022 and implement revenue-based fiscal consolidation.

The planned increase of fuel pump price has also pitched labour associations and civil organisations against government, as most have threaten to resist it and have called on Nigerians to come out to protest should government government go ahead with the implementation.

In 2014, under the government of president Goodluck Jonathan, there was wide-spread protest across the country, led by the opposition, under the name ‘OccupyNigeria’ , a well coordinated and supervised civil movement against the government for attempting to remove fuel subsidy. The plan was thwarted by the opposition, who are now in power.

The City of Lagos train are now the fastest on the continent of Africa

Lagos State government acquires two high velocity trains Red Line metro project.

The fastest trains in Africa are now in Lagos as the government purchases two of it as a part of its plan to launch the Red Line metro project, a 37-kilometre intracity railway system in the state.

The Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu completed the acquisition deal on Tuesday at a public event inside the Milwaukee facilities of Spanish train manufacturer Talgo Incorporated in the United States.

The ‘Red Line’ rail is expected to commence commercial operations between the last quarter of 2022 and the first quarter of 2023. When completed, the rail network will have 11 stations and will also become the first operational metro system in West Africa designed to convey at least 500,000 passengers daily in the first phase of operation.

“The 37km Red Line on completion will traverse eight stations and move passengers from Agbado to Oyingbo,” Governor Banajide Sanwo-Olu said on Wednesday.

“We are ramping up completion of the ancillary infrastructure like the train stations.”

Commenting on the acquisition, Sanwo-Olu said the move was in line with his administration’s commitment to Traffic Management and Transportation of the THEMES developmental agenda.

“Part of what we have done in the last two and half years is to have what we call Integrated Urban Mass transportation system, where we will be using road infrastructure, waterway infrastructure and rail infrastructure so that we can move over 20 million Lagosians within and around the city,” he said.

“We hope that this (purchase of the trains) will be the beginning of a mutually beneficial business relationship. Providing a source of livelihood for our citizens is all about providing jobs for our people, and that is what we are doing. It is about ensuring that we can build our economy; people can move from one location to another, and businesses can grow.

Nigeria's upper legislature chamber succumbed to pressure to remove the ' mandatory clause' from the electoral bill

Nigeria’s upper legislature chamber succumbed to pressure to remove the ‘ mandatory clause’ from the electoral bill in other receive presidential assent.

ABUJA, Nigeria (TVAFRINET) – The Nigerian Senate has expunged the direct primary clause from the Electoral Act Amendment bill – which made it mandatory for all candidates to go through direct primaries as a basic requirement for all political parties before election.

The Electoral Act Amendment bill was passed late last year by both houses and was refused assent by the president because of the ‘mandatory clause’.

The upper house, on Wednesday, decided to take the action of expunging the controversial clause after the Presidency refused to assent the version of the bill that mandated the use of direct primaries in electing candidates by the parties.

Alhaji Lawal, Senate President.

The Presidency has insisted that the mandating of direct primaries on the political parties will prove too expensive and will put unnecessary burden on the country’s limited resources, thus making it an unviable option for the country at this point in time.

The delay in the passage of the bill has however been preventing the country’s electoral body, INEC from releasing election timetables according to its chairman, Mahmood Yakubu.

“On the Electoral Amendment Bill currently before the National Assembly, the commission is encouraged by the Senate President’s assurance to give priority attention to the Bill when the National Assembly reconvenes from its recess today, and the commitment by the President to assent to the Bill as soon as the issue of mode of primaries by political parties is resolved,” explained Yakubu.

Panutche Camara promise to stop the Super Eagles in today’s match

Guinea-Bissau’s players and officials have taunted Nigeria against their todays’ group match contention in Garoua, promising to end the Eagles progress.

Currently, the Eagles have six points, leading the group against Guinea Bissau with only one point ranking third position.

Guinea Bissau drew 0-0 with Sudan in their first match, losing a penalty awarded to them late in the game, and then fell to a Mohamed Salah goal in their second group match, which they still believe they scored a good equaliser, that was cancelled late in the encounter.

Guinea Bissau midfielder, Panutche Camara had said yesterday that the team was prepared to face the Super Eagles squarely in their encounter and added that the Djurtus would be careful this time not to make the mistake that caused them the game with Egypt.

“I am very confident that we will win against Nigeria tomorrow (today). I know that the Super Eagles parade big players in Europe, but we will match them strength for strength,” Panutche said.

Baciro Cande, the Guinea Bissau coach threatens to clip the wings of the Eagles, promising the team must fall. “We want to prove a point that Guinea Bissau have good players who are capable of winning the AFCON title here in Cameroon.”

Kenya’s top court reviews disputed bid to change constitution

0

Kenya’s highest court began Tuesday weighing a legal bid to revive government plans to shake up the country’s political system, just months ahead of crucial elections.

The Supreme Court ruling on the proposed constitutional changes, expected after three days of hearings this week, may have major consequences for the August 9 presidential and parliamentary polls.

The government is seeking to overturn court rulings that had dealt a blow to President Uhuru Kenyatta and his allies by rejecting the reforms and the way they were introduced as unconstitutional.

The so-called Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) aims to expand the executive and overturn the winner-takes-all electoral system blamed for frequent explosions of poll-related violence in the East African nation.

But Kenyatta’s detractors see it as little more than a naked grab for power by a two-term president who cannot run a third time, with the BBI potentially allowing him to assume a new post of prime minister.

The BBI was drawn up following a rapprochement between Kenyatta and his erstwhile opponent Raila Odinga and a famous handshake between the two men after post-election fighting in 2017 left dozens of people dead.

The proposed amendments to the 2010 constitution were approved by parliament in May last year and were then due to be put to a referendum.

But just two days later, the Nairobi High Court ruled they were illegal as the president did not have the right to initiate the process.

Kenya’s Court of Appeal in August upheld that view and said Kenyatta could even be sued in a civil court for launching the process.

Kenyatta’s lawyer Karori Kamau insisted at Tuesday’s hearing that the law gives the president immunity from prosecution or civil action while he is in office.

“It is necessary that the president has decisional freedom, to make decisions that are key and important to safeguard the interest of the country,” he added.

Some analysts say that even if the Supreme Court’s seven-member panel sides with government and allows the proposals to be put to a public vote, there will probably not be time to hold a referendum before the August election.

With its diverse population and large ethnic voting blocs, Kenya — a country of nearly 50 million — has long suffered politically-motivated communal violence around election time, notably after a 2007 poll when more than 1,100 people died.

The East African economic powerhouse on Monday began the second round of voter registration, hoping to attract six million new voters, after a similar exercise late last year was blighted by apathy.

BBI’s supporters argue the project would improve fairness in the electoral system and help curb unrest, but critics warn it could undermine the country’s democratic institutions while creating more opportunities for patronage and corruption.

The reforms called for the creation of the posts of prime minister and two deputies, as well as an official opposition leader, and the expansion of parliament with 70 new constituencies.

“If the Supreme Court overturns the lower courts on (an) expanded executive, top job promises will take centre stage as campaign strategies and might affect the vote outcome,” Nairobi-based US International University lecturer Macharia Munene told AFP.

Odinga, who was the face of Kenya’s opposition for decades, announced in December he would make his fifth run for the presidency.

The 77-year-old veteran politician’s campaign got a boost on Monday when he won the endorsement of at least 30 of Kenya’s 47 county governors — compared to 10 for his rival, Deputy President William Ruto.

The presidential vote is widely seen as a two-horse race between Odinga and Ruto, whom Kenyatta had initially anointed as his successor.

But Ruto, 55, has been frozen out since Odinga’s 2018 pact with Kenyatta, and he is vehemently opposed to the BBI.

Keycee Madu was asked to step aside after allegation of ticketing offence surfaced

Alberta justice minister and solicitor general Kaycee Madu has be asked to step back from ministerial duties by Premier Jason Kenney the provinces premier and leader of the United Conservative Party, pending the completion of an investigation.

Report has it that the justice minister was fined for using his phone while driving only for him to solicit the Edmonton’s police chief to rescind the ticket fine.

“In the interim period, I have asked Minister Madu to step back from his ministerial duties,” Kennedy tweeted on Tuesday. “Minister Sonya Savage will act as Minister of Justice and Solicitor General during Minister Madu’s leave of absence.”

The Nigerian-born minister was pulled over on March 10, 2021 and fined $300 for being on his cellphone while driving in a school zone, of which he allegedly called Edmonton police Chief Dale McFee to discuss the ticket.

Madu claimed he was pulled over by an Edmonton police officer, who alleged he was driving while on his phone, whereas, his phone was in his pocket when he was pulled over and booked for the offence.

But according to Court records, Madu paid $300 fine two days after he was issued a ticket for operating a vehicle while using a cellphone.

On Madu’s part, he claims the whole incidence could be linked to racial profiling because he did not commit the offence.

“To be abundantly clear, at no point did I request that the ticket be rescinded. I would never do that. However, in that particular call, I regret raising the issue at all with the Chief McFee,” Madu said.

“Due to the timing of the incident, I wanted to ensure that I was not being unlawfully surveilled following the controversy surrounding the Lethbridge Police Service.

“I also raised concerns around profiling of racial minorities that was in the media at the time.”

The incidence attracted the concern of the Alberta opposition party, NDP justice critic – Irfan Sabir, who said Madu should resign as such action by him is “wholly unnacceptable”.

According to Sabir accusation, “his position as minister to initiate this conversation, and regardless of whether he asked the chief to cancel the ticket, it is political interference for him to have discussed it all.”

However, Kenney said he “will appoint a respected independent investigator to review the relevant facts and to determine whether there was interference in the administration of justice in this case.”

DJ Cuppy attacks Kanye West, says Aliko Dangote is the richest black man

Dj Cuppy says her Godfather Aliko Dangote is the richest black man

Dj Cuppy, a disc jockey and daughter to one of Nigeria’s richest men, Femi Otedola, recently responded to Kanye West’s claim of being the richest black man.

On the 16th of January 2022, Dj Cuppy made a post on Twitter saying, “random I know… I am a huge @KanyeWest fan. “However with all due respect I feel the need to remind him that he is not the ‘richest black man’ – it is in fact my Godfather @AlikoDangote.”

Cuppy tweet was a response to an interview Kanye West granted Tommy Lee for Hollywood Unlocked, which the American musician and entrepreneur claimed to be the richest black man.

Kanye said in the interview, “my daughter wanted me to go inside. I was like I am the richest black man and North’s [Kanye’s daughter] father, right, and the security was able to stop me from going into the room with my daughter and that had not been defined.”

The crux of the matter was that Kanye was trying to go into Kim Kardashian’s home, opposite his, but was stopped by security. He was relating the story to Tommy Lee when he dropped the “I am the richest black man” comment. It was this statement that triggered DJ Cuppy’s response.
