Suspected drone strike kills 3 in UAE, Huthis announce ‘military operation’

0

A suspected drone attack killed three people in a fuel tank blast in Abu Dhabi on Monday, officials said, as Yemen’s Huthi rebels announced a “military operation” in the United Arab Emirates.

Two Indians and a Pakistani died as three petrol tanks exploded near the storage facility of oil giant ADNOC, while a fire also ignited in a construction area at Abu Dhabi airport.

Yemen’s Iran-backed Huthi rebels announced a “military operation” in the UAE, a partner in Yemen’s pro-government coalition, in what would be a major escalation in the seven-year war.

Police said “small flying objects” were found at both places, suggesting the sort of deliberate attack that is almost unheard of in the wealthy UAE, a renowned safe haven in the volatile Middle East.

“Preliminary investigations indicate the detection of small flying objects, possibly belonging to drones, that fell in the two areas and may have caused the explosion and fire,” police said in a statement, adding that the incidents were under investigation.

Although the UAE gave few details about the incidents or the alleged perpetrators, neighbouring Saudi Arabia and Gulf ally Bahrain both labelled them “terrorist” attacks.

Huthi military spokesman Yahya Saree tweeted that the rebels’ armed forces would “announce an important military operation in the UAE in the coming hours”.

And while there was no formal claim of responsibility, Abdul Ilah Hajar, adviser to the president of the Huthis’ Supreme Political Council in Sanaa, said it was a warning shot from the rebels.

“We sent them a clear warning message by hitting places that are not of great strategic importance,” he told AFP.

“But it is a warning if the UAE continues its hostility to Yemen, it will not be able in the future to withstand the coming strikes.”

– ‘Booby-trapped drones’ -Drone attacks are a hallmark of the Huthis’ assaults on Saudi Arabia, the UAE ally which is leading the coalition fighting for Yemen’s government in a grinding civil war.

The rebels have previously threatened to target Abu Dhabi and Dubai, the gleaming crown jewels of the UAE which last year opened its first nuclear power plant.

Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry condemned “in the strongest terms the cowardly terrorist attack” while Bahrain also slammed the “terrorist Huthi militia’s launch of a number of booby-trapped drones”.

The incident follows a surge in fighting in Yemen and comes two weeks after the rebels seized a UAE-flagged ship, the Rwabee, and released footage purporting to show military equipment on board.

The UAE said the Rwabee, whose 11 crew are now hostages, was a “civilian cargo vessel” and called the hijacking a “dangerous escalation” in the busy Red Sea shipping route.

The rebels later rejected a UN Security Council demand for the ship’s immediate release, saying it was “not carrying… toys for children but weapons for extremists”.

Yemen’s conflict has been a catastrophe for millions of its citizens who have fled their homes, with many on the brink of famine, in what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The UAE joined the coalition against the Huthis before announcing a change of tack in 2019.

The pro-government Giants Brigade, backed by the Saudis and UAE, recently delivered a significant blow to the rebels by retaking three districts in Shabwa governorate.

The clashes were part of an upswing in violence in the shattered country, where the war is being fought on several fronts.

Why you should get on board with retro-fashion

Why you should get on board with retro-fashion

Fashion design throughout history has turned to previous eras for inspiration. Retro clothing retains and increases in value due to the fact that it is genuinely from the PAST.

Fortunately, Retro and Retro-inspired clothing seem to be the phrases of the year; with both
elegant and sustainable trends moving in sync.

A few retro-fashion styles we love;

SILK SCARFS AND TINTED SUNGLASSES
If your social media timeline isn’t flooded with fashion people tying printed silk scarves around their hair, necks and torsos, it soon will be best believe! This is an inspiration from the 70’s (the era in which silk scarfs ruled) The 70’s were also know for oversized sunglasses, the colored lenses definitely pulled it’s way into our modern-day wardrobes, especially those with the rectangular frames.

VESTS

WAIST COAT FOR THE PRIM AND PROPER
Make a grand statement with these layered under a blazer, or paired with a turtleneck bodysuit for the ultimate Retro Look!

SLIP DRESS
A personal favorite, the 1990’s gave way to a lot of trends that still remain relevant to this day and chief among them is the SLIP DRESS. The styling options are practically endless. The slip dress might be the most adaptable dress in your closet.

Historically speaking, various aspects of fashion from different eras frequently come back into vogue, but the retro movement attempts to capture an entire look, rather than an individual fashion component.

Djokovic ‘disappointed’ with losing deportation appeal

0

Novak Djokovic’s final bid to avoid deportation and play in the Australian Open despite being unvaccinated for COVID-19 ended Sunday when a court unanimously dismissed the No. 1-ranked tennis player’s challenge of a government minister’s decision to cancel his visa.

Djokovic, a 34-year-old from Serbia, said he was “extremely disappointed” by the ruling but respected it.

He has won a record nine Australian Open titles, including three in a row, but this time won’t even get the chance to try.

“I respect the Court’s ruling and I will cooperate with the relevant authorities in relation to my departure from the country,” he said in a statement.

Djokovic said he was “uncomfortable” that the focus had been on him since his visa was first canceled on arrival at Mebourne’s airport on Jan. 6.

“I hope that we can all now focus on the game and tournament I love,” he said.

The decision likely means that Djokovic will remain in detention in Melbourne until he is deported.

The national federation that runs the tournament, Tennis Australia, said it respects the decision of the Federal Court. “We look forward to a competitive and exciting Australian Open 2022 and wish all players the best of luck,” it said in a statement.

Deportation usually occurs as soon as possible after an order unless prevented by court action. The government has not said when Djokovic will leave. A deportation order also usually includes a three-year ban on returning to Australia.

In Serbia, President Aleksandar Vucic said the hearing was “a farce with a lot of lies.”

“They think that they humiliated Djokovic with this 10-day harassment, and they actually humiliated themselves. If you said that the one who was not vaccinated has no right to enter, Novak would not come or would be vaccinated,” Vucic told reporters.

He said he told Djokovic after talking to him “that we can’t wait to see him in Serbia, to return to his country, to come where he is always welcome.”

He did not say whether Djokovic said he would first go to Serbia after his deportation.

Chief Justice James Allsop said the ruling came down to whether the minister’s decision was “irrational or legally unreasonable.”

Hawke welcomed the decision. His office did not immediately provide detail of how or when Djokovic would leave.

“Australia’s strong border protection policies have kept us safe during the pandemic, resulting in one of the lowest death rates, strongest economic recoveries, and highest vaccination rates in the world,” Hawke said.

“Strong border protection policies are also fundamental to safe-guarding Australia’s social cohesion which continues to strengthen despite the pandemic,” he added.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison welcomed what he described as the “decision to keep our borders strong and keep Australians safe.”

But opposition spokesperson on the home affairs portfolio, Kristina Keneally, said Djokovic was being deported for what he said and did publicly overseas before the government gave him a visa in November.

“This mess isn’t a failure of our laws. It’s a failure of Morrison’s competence & leadership,” Keneally tweeted.

The pandemic response has become politically charged with Morrison’s conservative coalition seeking a fourth three-year term at elections due by May.

Infection rates have soared across much of Australian since December when Morrison’s government relaxed what had been some of the democratic world’s toughest restrictions on international travel.

Djokovic could potentially appeal to the High Court, but not in time for him to compete in the Australian tournament.

“I will now be taking some time to rest and to recuperate, before making any further comments beyond this,” he said.

The court process that Djokovic had hoped would keep his aspirations alive for a 21st Grand Slam title was extraordinarily fast by Australian standards.

Within three hours of Hawke’s announcement on Friday afternoon that Djokovic’s visa was canceled, his lawyers went before a Federal Circuit and Family Court judge to initiate their challenge to the decision. The case was elevated to the Federal Court on Saturday and submissions were filed by both sides that same day.

The three judges heard the case over five hours on Sunday and announced their verdict two hours later.

There was evidence that Djokovic was to be deported based on Hawke’s assessment that he was considered a “talisman of a community of anti-vaccination sentiment.”

Hawke’s lawyer Stephen Lloyd took aim at Djokovic’s anti-vaccination stance and his “history of ignoring COVID safety measures.”

Lloyd raised the example of Djokovic giving a French newspaper journalist an interview last month while he was infected with COVID-19 and taking off his mask during a photo shoot. Djokovic has acknowledged the interview was an error of judgment.

The minister canceled the visa on the grounds that Djokovic’s presence in Australia may be a risk to the health and “good order” of the Australian public and “may be counterproductive to efforts at vaccination by others in Australia.”

Djokovic’s visa was initially canceled on Jan. 6 by a border official who decided he didn’t qualify for a medical exemption from Australia’s rules for unvaccinated visitors. He was exempted from the tournament’s vaccine rules because he had been infected with the virus within the previous six months.

Vasek Pospisil, a Canadian who won the 2014 Wimbledon men’s doubles title and has worked with Djokovic to form an association to represent players, tweeted: “There was a political agenda at play here with the (Australian) elections coming up which couldn’t be more obvious. This is not his fault. He did not force his way into the country and did not ‘make his own rules’; he was ready to stay home.”

Pospisil wrote that Djokovic wouldn’t have tried to go to Australia at all and “been home with his family” had he not received the medical exemption.

Djokovic has won nine Australian Open titles, including three in a row, and a total of 20 Grand Slam singles trophies, tied with rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the most in the history of men’s tennis.

Djokovic’s dominance of late has been particularly impressive, winning four of the last seven major tournaments and finishing as the runner-up at two others.

The only time he did not get at least to the final in that span was at the 2020 U.S. Open, where he was disqualified in the fourth round for hitting a ball that inadvertently hit a line judge in the throat after a game.

Because Djokovic has withdrawn from the tournament after Monday’s schedule was released, he has been replaced in the field by what’s known as a “lucky loser” — a player who loses in the qualifying tournament but gets into the main draw because of another player’s exit before competition has started.

That player is Italian Salvatore Caruso, who is ranked 150th in the world.

Northern Leaders of Thought jettisons zoning in favour of the south, says any Nigerian is free to contest

Northern Leaders of Thought, a high-level assemblage of leaders of thoughts from the northern parts of Nigeria have rejected the zoning of the presidency to the south in the 2023 election, says credible and competent candidates should contest.

The meeting which have in attendance, notable persons from the northern region: ministers, lawmakers, religious leaders, politicians, including members of Northern Elders Forum (NEF); Prof. Ango Abdullahi and Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, said it will not accept the zoning of the 2023 Presidency to any region as it arose from an emergency meeting held in Arewa House, yesterday.

The communiqué of the meeting was issued and signed by Prof. Doknan Decent Danjuma Shenni, which states the position of the North against zoning as it urged the Federal Government to respect the rights and freedom of every citizen. It claimed “the fundamental rights of all political parties to field candidates of their choices, and the right of voters to freely exercise choices over who leads them cannot be compromised.

“Northerners have equal rights to aspire to all offices, but they must raise competence, evidence of personal integrity and commitments to the rule of law above all other considerations.

“Northerners should ignore provocative statements from groups in the South, who appear to believe in threats and hate campaigns as the hallmark or defining elements for elections. North should vote for the best leader.

“We the Northern Leaders of Thought also agreed that the current state of insecurity in the North is unprecedented and unacceptable”.

The group also emphasized on the issue of poverty and insecurity in the country and advised the government to restrategize in its spending to combat the dwindling economy and insecurity in the land.

“The fundamental rights of all political parties to field candidates of their choices, and the right of voters to freely exercise choices over who leads them cannot be compromised. “Northerners have equal rights to aspire to all offices but they must raise competence, evidence of personal integrity and commitments to the rule of law above all other considerations.”

The communique also reads: “the desperate condition of the economic existence of most Northerners, poses additional threats to security and the democratic process”, stressing, “It recommends that leaders should avoid pushing the population into deeper poverty and desperation with challenging economic policies and lack of empathy.

“ Government, at all levels, should consider a form of the structured welfare system to alleviate poverty in the populace.”

The group made known its reservation on the planned 2022 National Census and advised the Federal Government to postpone it considering the large numbers of displaced Nigerians and proximity of the census to the 2023 elections.

It also made it stand known to President Muhammadu Buhari on the issue of the amended Electoral Act, the leaders advised the presidency to accent to the Electoral Act, as such action would improve the quality of elections across the country.

The Leaders charged Northern groups to engage Southerners to improve understanding, lower tension and create a hormonious and relationship to foster peace amongst every citizens.

The meeting could be a fallout of the North not ready to cede power to the South considering the zoning agreement between both regions and the heightened political permutation going on across the country.

AFCON 2022: Nigeria defeats Sudan 3-1

ABUJA (TVAFRINET) – Sudan’s Falcons of Jediane got trashed by Nigeria 3-1 yesterday in the Group D match, qualifying alongside Cameroon, Morocco, to the next stage berth in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), presently taking place in Cameroun.

The Confederation of Africa Football (CAF) says the qualification of Super Eagles to the next round of the tournament is seen as a unique victory because this is the first time the team is winning their opening two matches at an Africa Cup of Nation, consecutively.

The match which took place at Roumde Adjia Stadium in Garoua, Cameroun – witnessed the first goal from Samuel Chukwueze in the third minute, then followed by Taiwo Awoniyi (45th), and Moses Simon (46th) – leaving Falcons of Jediane confused.

The Nigerian team went into the match prepared and took no chances. As the match began , the Nigerian side positioned itself to convert a good opportunity from Moses Simon, serving Chukwueze, who made way despite the stiff confrontation of the Sudanese defenders, yet found the back of the net, leaving Goalkeeper Ali Abdullah Abou in shock.

The Sudanese increase their momentum to remedied the Nigerian goal in the seventh minute, but failed to balance the score.

The Eagles failed to unsettle the Sudanese with another goal in the 35th minute, as well as in the 40th minute, as Joe Aribo miscalculated the opportunity that was right in front of him to humble the Falcons of Jediane further.

The first minute of the second half came handy for the Super Eagles as pressure mounted on the opponent’s 18th-yard box – which they couldn’t control – leading to another goal by Simon, making it 3-0.

Way into the second half, Ola Aina infringed on a Sudanese attacker which was at first unnoticed before the match was put on hold as the referee consulted through a VAR recall, awarding a penalty against Nigeria eventually, an opportunity Walieldin Khidir did not hesitate to convert into a goal, making the tally 3-1.

The Sudanese increased their effort but was curtailed my the Eagles as both side looked exhausted. Alex Iwobi came into the match to replace Chukwueze , later on, Kelechi Iheanacho was pulled out for Ahmed Musa , Joe Aribo was also replaced by Kelechi Nwakali.

The coach of the Super Eagle, Augustine Eguavoen said the players and the team in general was a work in progress and that he was satisfied by their conduct of the players so far.

“I am impressed with the way and manner that our players conducted themselves. We will go back and look for a way to improve on this performance.

“I commend the players and I also appreciate the support of all Nigerians. We will continue to do our best. We will savour this victory this moment before we plan for the last group match against Guinea Bissau,” Eguavoen.

Vice president of Congo’s parliament resigns over ‘bullying, humiliation’

0

The vice president of Democratic Republic of Congo’s parliament Jean-Marc Kabund resigned on Friday over what he described as bullying, humiliation and torture.

Kabund, a top ally of President Felix Tshisekedi, quit two days after CCTV footage shared on social media appeared to show members of Tshisekedi’s Republican Guard raiding his house and detaining one man.

Spokespersons for the government and the Guard, an arm of the military, could not be reached for comment.

A leading figure behind Tshisekedi’s rise to power, Kabund’s decision to quit highlights emerging fault-lines in the country’s leadership, and could spell uncertainty for the future of the ruling Sacred Union coalition ahead of the 2023 presidential election, political analysts said.

CCTV footage shared by Kabund’s family showed half a dozen armed men in army fatigues and maroon berets entering the garden of his home at around 19:30 on Wednesday evening. They removed one man from the property, kicking and hitting him as they left.

Subsequent videos on social media appeared to show the house had been ransacked, with furniture upturned and possessions scattered across the floor. Reuters could not authenticate the videos.

“Today I take the decision to resign from my position as first vice president of the national assembly,” Kabund wrote on Twitter, without elaborating.

“Thus begins a new page of history, which will be written with the sweat of our brow, which will flow every day that we face bullying, humiliation and torture.”

The raid came a day after a video surfaced on social media showing police tasked with Kabund’s protection wrestling a rifle off a member of the Republican Guard who was sat in a car in traffic. It’s not clear how the confrontation began.

“Everything will now depend on the follow-up,” said Tresor Kibangula, a political analyst at New York University’s Congo Research Group. “Will he leave the (President’s party)? Will he be able to recruit or constitute a core of followers within the Sacred Union? Nothing is certain.”

Danku steps in as Portable sever tiers with Kogbagidi

Portable abandons Kogbagidi for Danku

Cerebral artiste manager Danku has taken over the coordination of Portable’s career from Kogbagidi, as the singer says his former manager can not be trusted.

The artiste took the podcast of veteran rapper, Jahbless to express his bitterness about his recurring misunderstanding with Kogbadigi.

Kogbagidi, who also has another artiste Bella Shmurda in his management, hasn’t formerly spoken about his misunderstanding and the real issues with the rave of the moment artiste that caused their separation.

It was Jahbless who asked Portable about his relationship with Kogbagidi, of which the artiste took the opportunity to voice his anger and disappointment with his former management.

According to Portable: “Kogbagidi always dey f*** up. Why? I go tell am say boss, all these things I no like am. You know say me, I get [madness] already. But una go still dey do wetin [I no like]…

Poco Lee tell Kogbagidi say, ‘Boss, all these things wey this boy dey talk, you no tell me naw.’ I tell [Kogbagidi] say person dey offend me. I tell am say [Poco] dey vex me, e no answer me, until I wicked [Poco]. Na rubbish nw. Because of wetin you wan chop.”

The artiste also claims that Ijoba Danku, a close friend of Kogbagidi, is now in charge of managing his career because he was instrumental to settling his squabbles with Kogbagidi.

Portable said the reason why he prefers Danku is that he does not put him under undue pressure over the way he dresses or appear, that he accepts him the way he looks and makes him feel comfortable around him, unlike his former manager. He also said that Danku has already assumed the position of Kogbagidi and that Ege Foreign is his manager.

What’s the issue?

On December 21, 2021, Portable took to his TikTok account to express displeasure at celebrated dancer, Poco Lee‘s involvement with his hit record, ‘Zazoo Zeh.’

He was mad that Poco Lee had rights to his song. On most streaming platforms, the record is credited to ‘Poco Lee X Portable X Olamide.’ Portable was displeased by the fact that Poco Lee’s name comes first on the record, not his.

He also claimed that when Olamide brought him on stage to perform ‘Zazoo Zehh’ at the Livespot Festival, Wizkid sprayed him $3000, but Poco Lee only gave him $600.

A few hours later, Kogbagidi, who manages the affairs of Nigerian artist, Portable, took to his Instagram page to post a video of himself, sending the singer out of his house and seemingly cutting ties with the artist.

Nigerian celebrities like Olamide, Yomi Fabiyi, Slimcase and more pleaded with the him to forgive his erring ward.
