Malians demonstrate against regional sanctions

0

Thousands of people demonstrated in the Malian capital Bamako on Friday against sanctions imposed by neighbouring countries on the transitional military government for trying to extend its hold on power.

People poured into Independence Square, holding up signs saying “Down with ECOWAS” and “Down with France”, to protest restrictions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States and backed by former colonial master France.

A military junta seized power in a 2020 coup and initially agreed to hold elections this February. It has since backtracked and recently proposed a new date of December 2025.

The move has drawn international condemnation, but many Malians continue to support interim President Assimi Goita, an army colonel whose overthrow of Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was widely popular.

“I am here to say that Mali is first for Malians, it’s not ECOWAS or France who are going to make decisions in our place,” said Adama Cisse, a 40-year-old teacher in the crowd.

The sanctions have left the landlocked country isolated as neighbours have cancelled flights, closed borders and cut off its access to regional financial markets.

Western powers have voiced support for ECOWAS’s actions, and the European Union said on Thursday it would also impose sanctions.

Mali was already in a spat with Western allies, who accuse it of hiring Russian private military contractors to provide security services. The Malian government has said the Russians are instructors who came with equipment bought from Russia.

Speaking at the rally, Prime Minister Choguel Maiga praised Russia and China for blocking a proposed statement at the U.N. Security Council this week, backed by Western and African countries, endorsing the ECOWAS sanctions.

“Today Russia and China are opposed to the illegal and illegitimate embargo against our country and our people,” Maiga, dressed in military fatigues despite never having served in the armed forces, told the crowd.

French troops have been deployed to Mali since 2013 to help fight Islamist militant groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State. The U.N. peacekeeping mission MINUSMA also has about 12,000 troops in Mali to try to contain the violence.

In a further sign of fallout, Sweden on Friday said it would review its contribution to the U.N. peacekeeping force in addition to withdrawing its forces this year from a European special forces mission in Mali, as previously planned.

Opposition parties in Mali have also criticised the transitional government for delaying elections and laid the blame for the sanctions at its feet.

In a pre-match interview ahead of the Super Eagles Vs the Falcons of Jediane match, Super Eagle’s coach has expressed his team’s readiness to take on the Falcons of Sudan at today’s match.

It is no news that the Nigerian Super Eagles dazzled everyone with their brilliant performance against Egypt on Tuesday, 11th January 2022. Even Mohamed Salah whose performance drew the most anticipation, performed as much as the goal posts when faced with the Super Eagles.

In the light of their performance against Egpyt and in view of today’s match against Sudan, Super Eagles Head Coach, Augustine Eguavoen, made the following comment: Sudan is not a pushover, and more so, they are one point, we are three points. We want to consolidate on that and we will keep pushing on harder to have a chance to qualify for the knockout phase. They have players who in their attack who are quite fast, probably as fast as Mo Salah, but tomorrow they are playing against Nigeria and we expect they will raise their game, but we will respond as well.”

It is true that Sudan has missed out on four editions of the Africa Cup Of Nations, but their current head Coach, Tia Burhan, has reiterated his team’s grit and motivation to compete and come out successful. According to him, “we need to prove a point that we have developed and belong to the top group since we have won the AFCON trophy before.”

Tia was referring to Sudan’s AFCON win in 1970, but this is not 1970, and we are rooting for our boys to clinch the Cup or at least have a good time while at it.

Russia says Ukraine talks hit ‘dead end’, Poland warns of risk of war

VIENNA/MOSCOW – Poland’s foreign minister said on Thursday that Europe was closer to war than any time in the last 30 years as Russia gave a bleak assessment of diplomatic efforts this week to defuse tensions over Ukraine.

Russia said it was hitting a dead end as it tried to persuade the West to bar Ukraine from joining NATO and roll back decades of alliance expansion in Europe.

It offered a stark view before the week’s security meetings have even finished, with talks under way in Vienna on Thursday at the 57-nation Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Without naming Russia in his address to envoys from the 57 OSCE members, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau mentioned tensions in Ukraine, Georgia, Armenia and Moldova, all countries with active or frozen conflicts in which Russia has been alleged to be a party.

“It seems that the risk of war in the OSCE area is now greater than ever before in the last 30 years,” he said.

“For several weeks we have been faced with the prospect of a major military escalation in Eastern Europe,” he said, launching his country’s year-long chairmanship of the region’s largest security organisation.

He reported no breakthrough at the meeting.

Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told RTVI television in an interview that Russian military specialists were providing options to President Vladimir Putin in case the situation around Ukraine worsened, but diplomacy must be given a chance.

However, he said talks with the United States in Geneva on Monday and with NATO in Brussels on Wednesday had shown there was a “dead end or difference of approaches”, and he saw no reason to sit down again in the coming days to re-start the same discussions.

The U.S. envoy to the OSCE talks said the West should not give in to blackmail.

Russia has forced the United States and its allies to the negotiating table by assembling around 100,000 troops near the border with Ukraine, while denying it plans to invade. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said U.S. demands for them to pull back were unacceptable.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said: “Despite the unsatisfactory week of great diplomacy for Russia, I believe that the only way for the Russians to confirm their lack of intention to solve problems by force is to continue the discussion in the established formats, in particular in the OSCE.”

‘ELIMINATE THREATS’

The barrage of pessimistic comment from Russian ministers and officials cast grave doubt on the chances of a diplomatic breakthrough at one of the most fraught moments in East-West relations since the Cold War.

Russian Ambassador Alexander Lukashevich told the OSCE: “If we don’t hear a constructive response to our proposals within a reasonable timeframe and an aggressive line of behaviour towards Russia continues, we will be forced to draw appropriate conclusions and take all necessary measures to ensure strategic balance and eliminate unacceptable threats to our national security.”

He went on: “Russia is a peace-loving country. But we do not need peace at any cost. The need to obtain these legally formalised security guarantees for us is unconditional.”

His speech was consistent with a pattern of recent statements in which Russia has said it wants a diplomatic solution but has also rejected calls to reverse its troop build-up and warned of unspecified consequences for Western security if its demands go unheeded.

The United States says Moscow’s calls to veto Ukrainian membership and halt NATO military activity in eastern Europe are non-starters, but that it is willing to talk about arms control, missile deployments and confidence-building measures.

Russia says that after decades of NATO expansion it is determined to draw red lines and stop the alliance from admitting Ukraine as a member or basing missiles there.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said after talks with Russia on Wednesday that countries must be free to choose their own security arrangements.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticised a sanctions bill unveiled by U.S. Senate Democrats on Wednesday that would target top Russian government and military officials, including Putin, as well as key banking institutions, if Russia attacks Ukraine.

Peskov said sanctioning Putin would be tantamount to severing relations.

“We view the appearance of such documents and statements extremely negatively against the background of an ongoing series of negotiations, albeit unsuccessful ones,” he said.

U.S. ambassador Michael Carpenter told the OSCE meeting: “As we prepare for an open dialogue on how to strengthen security for the benefit of all, we must decisively reject blackmail and never allow aggression and threats to be rewarded.”

Russia has said it will decide on its next moves after this week’s talks. It has threatened unspecified “military -technical measures” if its demands are rejected.

U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman said on Wednesday that if Russia walked away, it would show it was never serious about diplomacy in the first place.

Nigerian startups help fight scourge of fake medicines

The most counterfeited are drugs for anti-malaria, pain and antibiotics, according to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC).

To fight the flood of fake pills, the agency, in partnership with the startups has created stickers with unique codes that manufacturers and distributors can attach to boxes and sachets of pills. Consumers can then use apps on their phones to scan the code and confirm their authenticity.

Lagos-based Chekkit Technologies’ mobile app allows patients to check authenticity and enables manufacturers to see the number of new customers using their products.

“They’ve (manufacturers) also been able to discover things like side effects, potential side effects their product could have on consumers based on what people say about their product,” the company’s founder Dare Odumade told Reuters.

NAFDAC’s director of investigation and enforcement directorate Kingsley Ejiofor said the agency had in the past three years seized 2 trillion naira ($4.8 billion) worth of counterfeit drugs.

He said tracking apps were boosting the confidence of consumers.

“We currently have about 200 containers of counterfeit medicine at the ports scheduled for destruction. Just imagine the people that could have died as a result of use of such products,” Ejiofor said, adding that China and India were the major sources of the fake medicines.

At Sproxil Africa, a mobile authentication firm, Managing Director Chinedum Chijioke said the company’s app empowered users to validate the authenticity of products they were purchasing.

Biofem Industries imports pharmaceutical products and uses Sproxil technology, which has helped create more visible supply chain for its drugs and other fast-moving consumer goods, said Chief Executive Officer Femi Soremekun.
