The use of calming and relaxing scents has existed for quite a while, and different scents have been associated with particular activities, such as incense for prayer, to signify a lifting of spirits.

This proves that certain organic substances, such as essential oils, can influence your state of mind and relieve pent-up emotion and stress.

The basic essential oils you should need for a home massage are explained in this article. They have tremendous positive effect to the body due to their aromatherapy powers.

Aromatherapy massage oils:

Makeshift ingredients and occasional interruptions usually characterise a home massage. To get the most out of this quality self-care treatment, you want to get rid of distractions that can interrupt your mental exercise.

Essential oils can be grouped into several classes, and these classes reflect their uses. Generally, any essential oil may be used for aromatherapy, but these particular oils have a more calming effect than the others.

  • Lavender

One of the most popular essential oils- lavender is known for its sweet, floral scent. This essential oil is a match for an energising massage, promoting blood flow, stamina, and energy release. As it improves blood circulation, it also helps to numb pain, providing temporary pain relief. When coupled with the touch stimuli of a massage, the pain-relieving abilities of lavender are brought to full potency.

  • Chamomile

Native to southern Europe, Western Europe, and some parts of Asia, Chamomile earned its nickname “Blue Chamomile” due to its vivid blue colour. In Ancient Greece and Egypt, oil was used to relieve tension. Its powerful antioxidant properties informed its use as a topical massage oil. It has been used to promote vitality and to ease the discomfort associated with PMS and stress-related symptoms.

To use this oil, dab a little on the skin and massage with the heel of your palm. Dilution is not necessary unless for extremely sensitive skin.

  • Frankincense

This essential oil is highly sought after. It has a complexly soothing aroma, capable of enveloping users and transporting them into a calm and happy place. Possessing anti-depressant properties, it can be used as an immune system boost. Plus, it is also a great remedy for troubled minds and anxious hearts.

It has been used in the past to relieve the symptoms of cough and to aid breathing. It is a great therapy for people who have frequent panic attacks. Besides this, it improves concentration and memory, clearing the clutter in the mind and restoring peace and order.

  • Geranium

This oil has physical and mental implications on its users. It has special rejuvenating effects on the skin, helping your skin look healthier, firmer, and brighter. Because of this application, it is used to combat menopausal symptoms such as loss of collagen. It acts as an astringent, shrinking large pores that hinders a perfect skin structure. The result is smoother, younger-looking skin.

The effects are not lost on the mind. Geranium improves circulation, which leads to improved memory and brain function. This ingredient is key during a massage for the elderly or for the recovering. A massage with Geranium will have you feeling brand new.

Other essential oils that have found use in various homes as massage oils and diffusing oils include eucalyptus, bergamot, peppermint, and rosemary oils.

  • Coriander

This essential oil provides an aroma that is an escape from the business and harshness of everyday life. Its scent may be described as warm and homey. Using this oil in a massage provides a deep sense of relaxation of the body and the mind. The scent reminds one of the moments when they were happiest and when their hearts were fullest.

Truly, the scent aids circulation and digestion, helping your blood flow smoothly and calmly. It also relieves mental stress and suppresses cramps. This is useful in cough suppression and in alleviating pain associated with periods and ovulation.

Positive test of some of the organizers of the 2021 Miss World competition to Covid-19, has made the event to be postponed. The event which was earlier scheduled to hold 23rd December in Puerto Rico, has been shifted.

Algeria says will not offer to make up with France
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune

Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said Saturday he would not make the “first move” towards easing tensions with former colonial power France after critical comments from Paris about his country.

The diplomatic spat has been fuelled by a visa row and media reports that President Emmanuel Macron told descendants of fighters in Algeria’s 1954-1962 war of independence that the North African country was ruled by a “political-military system” that had “totally re-written” its history.

“Macron completely pointlessly revived an old conflict,” Tebboune told German magazine Der Spiegel.

“I won’t be the one to make the first move” to ease tensions, he added.

“No Algerian will accept it if I get in touch with those who insulted us.”

French daily Le Monde in early October quoted Macron as saying: “Was there an Algerian nation before French colonisation? That’s the question.”

The comments reflected “the old hatred of colonial masters, and I know that Macron is far from thinking like this,” Tebboune said.

Algeria has recalled its ambassador from Paris and banned French military planes from its airspace over the tensions.

Asked by Der Spiegel if the fallout was likely to be resolved any time soon, Tebboune was defiant.

“No, if the French want to go to Mali or Niger now, they will just have to fly for nine hours instead of four,” the Algerian president said, referring to two countries where France has sent troops to help fight jihadists.

He said he would however make an exception to “rescue wounded people”.

At the end of September, France said it would sharply reduce the number of visas it grants to citizens of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia, accusing the former French colonies of not doing enough to allow illegal immigrants to return.

Taliban’s arms seizures embarrass Washington

Taliban’s arms embarrass

Videos of Taliban fighters parading in US-made armoured vehicles, wielding US-supplied firearms and climbing on American Black Hawk helicopters after the defeat of Afghan government forces have embarrassed the White House.

The Islamist insurgents, who easily captured control of the country after a months-long campaign, seized huge amounts of weaponry, equipment and munitions from the Afghan armed forces, most of it supplied over the past two decades by Washington.

Social media showed Taliban fighters carrying M4 and M18 assault rifles and M24 sniper weapons, driving around in the iconic US Humvees and, in one video, apparently wearing US-style special forces tactical uniforms.

The images are underpinning a political attack on President Joe Biden for alleged mishandling of the US withdrawal from the country after 20 years of war.

Most of the equipment has been seized from the Afghan forces who, despite two decades of training and tens of billions of dollars from the United States, conceded the capital Kabul at the weekend without a fight.

“We don’t have a complete picture, obviously, of where every article of defense materials has gone. But certainly, a fair amount of it has fallen into the hands of the Taliban,” said White House National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Tuesday.

‘Botched withdrawal’
“Obviously, we don’t have a sense that they are going to readily hand it over to us,” he said.

Republicans seized on the admission to pounce on Biden.

“Thanks to Biden’s botched withdrawal, the Taliban is better equipped today than they ever have been,” said Republican national chair Ronna McDaniel.

According to official figures, the US military supplied the Afghan army with more than 7,000 machine guns, 4,700 Humvees and 20,000 grenades in recent years.

The Afghans have also received artillery and reconnaissance drones from Washington, as well as more than 200 aircraft, both fixed-wing and helicopters.

Their continued operation depended heavily on US technical support and parts, however.

According to photographs published Wednesday by Janes, the defense specialists, some 40 Afghan military aircraft were flown into Uzbekistan over the past week to escape the Taliban advance, including five UH-60 Black Hawk and 16 Russia Mi-17 helicopters and 10 A-29 Super Tucano attack airplanes.

In its 16-month drawdown, the Pentagon removed huge amounts of its own equipment from Afghanistan, and handed some of it to the Afghan army.

But hardware supplied to the Afghan forces that is now in Taliban hands has raised concerns.

Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said Wednesday that the department is looking at the issue.

Limited threat
“We obviously don’t want to see our equipment in the hands of those who would act against our interests, or the interests of the Afghan people,” Kirby told reporters.

“There are numerous policy choices that can be made, up to and including destruction,” he said, without giving specifics.

The captured arms and vehicles only expand the Taliban’s powers in limited ways, experts say.

“The most dangerous weapons the Taliban have captured are the D-30 howitzers and Afghan Air Force assets,” said Jonathan Schroden, director of the Countering Threats and Challenges Program at CNA, a Washington security consultancy.

“It is not clear that they have the ability to use all of the air platforms that they have captured, but they have already demonstrated the ability to use those howitzers,” he said.

Even then, it makes them at best a limited direct threat to better-armed neighbours.

On the other hand, the massive amounts of small arms and munitions they inherited, said Schroden, could “conceivably find their way to many different parts of the globe and to a variety of other terrorist groups.”

“Probably the best thing the US can do at this point is to work with Afghanistan’s neighbours to try and interdict the transport of any of this equipment across the country’s borders,” he said.

Russia fines Google for not removing illegal content

0

A Moscow court on Thursday again fined Google for failing to remove banned content as foreign tech giants face mounting pressure in Russia.

In recent months, Russia has been taking legal action against foreign tech companies for not deleting content banned by the authorities, including pornographic material or posts deemed extremist or condoning drugs or suicide.

On Thursday, the Tagansky district court slapped Google with three fines totalling six million rubles ($80,850) for the violation, according to the official Telegram channel of Moscow courts.

Earlier this week, the US company was hit with five other fines totalling 14 million rubles over the same charges.

Last month Google was fined three million rubles for breaching data storage laws.

According to the RIA Novosti news agency, Google has so far been fined 32.5 million rubles in Russia.

It was the first time the company was penalised under the controversial law that requires the personal data of Russian users to be stored on servers within Russia.

Moscow has recently ramped up pressure on foreign tech companies, especially social networks, after accusing them early this year of not removing posts calling for minors to join protests in support of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny.

Facebook has been handed fines for failing to remove illegal content, while Twitter has had its service speeds in Russia throttled.

In recent years, the Russian government has also been tightening control over the internet under the pretext of fighting extremism and protecting minors.

But government critics have denounced official oversight of the web as a means to stifle debate and silence dissent.

Minister pledges support for military widows of 1992 planes crash

0

The Minister of Defence, retired Maj.-Gen. Bashir Magashi, has pledged to support the widows of the military officers who were involved in the 1992 C-130 plane crash in Lagos.

Magashi made the pledge when he granted audience to the representatives of the Widows led by their National Coordinator, Ogale Jude, on Wednesday in Abuja.

The Special Assistant to the Minister on Media and Publicity, Mohammad Abdulkadri, announced this in a statement on Wednesday.

He assured them of his commitment to address the gaps that led to the delay and discrepancies in settling the commitments to the widows.

The minister, however, tasked the group to furnish the ministry with the updated facts and figures about members living or dead.

He added that the raw data would trigger actionable efforts to meet their demands once and for all.

The group coordinator, Jude, raised the general concerns about the yet to be fulfilled promises by the tripartite bodies of the federal government, the home states of the deceased and the services.

Jude said promises in areas of building houses, purchase of cars and trainings of children of the families of the officers who paid the supreme price in line of duty were yet to be fulfilled.

The group coordinator, who said that some of their members were no longer alive, said that they died as a result of lack of funds to cater for their medical bills.

WIDER IMAGE Nigeria’s hyena men put maligned animals centre stage

0

A hyena may not be your average house pet, but in northern Nigeria some men keep the creatures in their homes, display them at festivals and even use their dung or saliva to make remedies.

Abdullahi Jahun comes from a line of hyena men, as they are called. He learnt how to tame and handle a hyena from his father, and now makes a living from touring around northern Nigeria to entertain crowds with his own animal.

“This was my job from when I started walking as a child,” said Jahun during an appearance in the city of Kano. “I used to see my elders do it and became enthusiastic about it.”

Jahun says he captured his hyena two years ago and has taken it to events such as festivals, coronations of traditional rulers, and durbars, a type of parade where horsemen in colourful costumes show off their skills to honour a local emir.

Jahun and his hyena usually appear alongside other street performers such as snake charmers, drummers and dancers.

He allows children to sit on its back, and sometimes he carries a child on his own shoulders and the hyena around his hips at the same time.

Depending on the size of the crowd, he makes between 8,000 and 20,000 naira ($20-$50) per appearance.

Hyenas are often viewed as repulsive and sinister, partly due to their scavenging habits in the wild, but traditional leader Nasiru Wada says hyena men have been part of popular culture in northern Nigeria for many generations.

DYING ART’

“It used to be really prolific but not anymore,” he said, adding that hyenas are harder to come by than in the past due to shrinking habitats. “What we have seen now is a dying art.”

Wada acknowledged that the ways of the hyena men may not chime with modern ideas about the treatment of animals, and conservationists have raised questions about how they are captured and kept.

But Yaya Kawu, a farmer, hunter and traditional healer, who lives with a hyena and several snakes in a rural town in Kano State, says his animals are considered part of normal life in his community.

His mud brick compound regularly attracts gaggles of children eager to look at the animals, and neighbours who have just slaughtered a goat sometimes offer him a gift of meat for his hyena.

Kawu sells remedies made from hyena dung, saliva or hair, which he says can help with a range of ailments — even bad behaviour by teenagers.

“Some young people, they get into drugs, alcohol. The parents come to me and I give them a remedy so that everything will be all right,” he said.
