UNICEF: OVER 20,000 out-of-school children in Katsina to have access to learning as UNICEF, Katsina government launch cash-transfer programme

0

UNICEF has vowed to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Katsina State, Nigeria. In partnership with the Katsina State government, UNICEF launched a cash transfer program in June 2022 to provide learning opportunities for over 20,000 out-of-school children. The program aims to improve school enrollment and attendance rates, particularly for girls, and provide literacy and numeracy skills linked to employability and livelihood schemes. With 536,132 children currently out of school in Katsina State, this initiative is a crucial step towards ensuring every child has access to quality education.

UNICEF’s Representative in Nigeria, Cristian Munduate, emphasized the organization’s commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children in Katsina State. “Education is a fundamental right, and we will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that every child in Nigeria has access to quality learning opportunities,” Munduate said.

The cash transfer program, funded by the European Union, provides a monthly stipend to caregivers of out-of-school children who enroll in the program. This incentive helps to address poverty-related barriers to education and encourages families to prioritize their children’s education.

In addition to the cash transfer program, UNICEF is also supporting the Katsina State government in improving the quality of education in schools, including teacher training, provision of learning materials, and renovation of classrooms.

Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State expressed his appreciation for UNICEF’s support, stating, “We are committed to reducing the number of out-of-school children in our state, and we believe that this partnership with UNICEF will help us achieve our goal.”

With the combined efforts of UNICEF, the Katsina State government, and other stakeholders, there is hope for a significant reduction in the number of out-of-school children in Katsina State and improved access to quality education for all.

He acknowledged the impact of investments in China’s economy and the need for bold decisions to drive Nigeria’s prosperity ¹. Dr. Oche Barnabas, President of NIDO China, commended President Tinubu for strengthening Nigeria-China relations ¹. He requested the President’s assistance in advocating for Nigeria to be officially recognized as a native English-speaking nation, which would open up job and educational opportunities for Nigerians in China.

President Tinubu also announced plans to establish a Nigeria-China Business Council to promote trade and investment between the two nations. He emphasized the need for Nigeria to learn from China’s experiences in infrastructure development, manufacturing, and technology.

“We will replicate China’s infrastructure development in Nigeria,” Tinubu said. “We will build roads, bridges, airports, and seaports that will make Nigeria a hub for trade and commerce in Africa.”

The President’s visit to China has been seen as a significant step towards strengthening Nigeria-China relations and attracting investment to Nigeria. With China’s expertise in infrastructure development and Nigeria’s vast resources, the partnership has the potential to transform Nigeria’s economy.

However, some experts have raised concerns about the potential risks of Nigeria’s increasing dependence on China. They argue that Nigeria needs to be cautious in its dealings with China and ensure that any agreements signed are in the best interests of the country.

Despite these concerns, President Tinubu remains optimistic about the future of Nigeria-China relations. He believes that with the right partnerships and investments, Nigeria can achieve its goal of becoming a prosperous and developed nation.

Petrol scarcity to worsen as trucks remain stranded at depots

0

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Petroleum Refinery have been at loggerheads over the pricing of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), also known as petrol. The dispute has led to a stalemate, with Dangote refusing to supply petrol to independent marketers at the government-approved price.

NNPCL had directed Dangote to sell petrol to independent marketers at N445 per liter, but Dangote has insisted on selling at N605 per liter, citing the high cost of production.

“We cannot sell at a loss,” said a source close to Dangote. “The cost of production is too high, and we need to recoup our investment.”

The impasse has left many trucks stranded at depots, unable to lift petrol due to the pricing dispute. This has further exacerbated the petrol scarcity in the country, with many filling stations shutting down due to lack of product.

The situation has been described as “critical” by industry experts, who warn that the scarcity could worsen if the dispute is not resolved quickly.

“The government needs to intervene urgently to resolve this dispute,” said Chinedu Okoronkwo, an energy expert. “The scarcity is already biting hard, and if it worsens, it could have serious consequences for the economy.”

The Nigerian government has yet to comment on the dispute, but sources say that officials are working behind the scenes to resolve the issue.

In the meantime, Nigerians continue to suffer the consequences of the scarcity, with many forced to queue for hours to buy petrol at exorbitant prices.

The sale of the subsidized rice is being coordinated by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in collaboration with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the Federal Civil Service Commission. To purchase the rice, public servants are required to present their NIN slip and a valid staff identity card at designated sales centers across the country.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Mohammad Abubakar, explained that the initiative is part of the federal government’s efforts to mitigate the effects of the current economic challenges on Nigerians.

“The subsidized rice is aimed at reducing the financial burden on public servants and Nigerians in general, who are struggling to make ends meet due to the prevailing economic conditions,” Abubakar said.

The sales centers have been set up in various locations, including Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Port Harcourt, to ensure easy access to the subsidized rice.

The government has also warned against racketeering and hoarding, stating that anyone caught engaging in such activities would be prosecuted.

The initiative has been commended by many Nigerians, who see it as a step in the right direction towards addressing the country’s food security challenges.

However, some have raised concerns about the requirement for NIN, citing concerns about privacy and the potential for fraud.

The government has assured that the NIN requirement is necessary to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process.

Matawalle Explains Why Northerners Dominate Tinubu’s Security Team

0

Minister of Defense, Bello Matawalle, has revealed why northerners dominate President Bola Tinubu’s security team. Speaking at a press conference in Gusau, Matawalle attributed the dominance to the region’s “patriotism and loyalty”.

Matawalle stated, “The north has always been known for its patriotism and loyalty to the country. It’s no surprise that northerners are leading the security team, as they are willing to sacrifice everything for the nation’s unity and progress.”

He emphasized that the security team’s composition reflects the region’s commitment to protecting the country. Matawalle also praised Tinubu for recognizing the north’s value and capabilities.

The governor’s comments come amidst concerns about regional imbalance in the security team’s composition. However, Matawalle’s explanation highlights the north’s dedication to national security and its willingness to serve the country.

Matawalle’s statement has sparked a mixed reaction, with some praising the north’s patriotism and others expressing concerns about regional dominance in the security sector.

Senator Shehu Sani, a prominent political analyst, noted, “While patriotism and loyalty are essential, it’s crucial to ensure regional balance and inclusivity in critical sectors like security.”

However, Alhaji Ahmed Yusuf, a northern elder statesman, supported Matawalle’s stance, saying, “The north has always been the backbone of Nigeria’s security. It’s only fitting that they lead the charge.”
