Afenifere scraps acting leader and deputy positions, drops Pa Ayo Adebanjo

Nigeria’s pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere has undergone restructuring, with the positions of acting leader and deputy acting leader abolished completely, forcing Pa Ayo Adebanjo to step down.

The new development was reached in the organisation’s general meeting held in Akure, the capital of Ondo State, on Wednesday, January 24, 2023 – where a communique issued.

The Afenifere saw the need to restructure itself for better performance and decided to abolish the old order on which Pa Ayo Adebanjo functioned in an acting leader capacity.

Following the restructuring, the duties and authority of advising Afenifere will now be shouldered by Afenifere Elders Caucus, which constitutes 21 elder statesmen from the southwest of the country.

Notably, the positions of acting leader and deputy leader have been officially abrogated.

Reuben Fasoranti has been appointed as the chairman of the elders caucus, with other members including prominent figures such as Olu Falae, C O Adebayo, Femi Okunrounmu, Seinde Arogbofa, Kofo Bucknor Akerele, Ayo Ladigbolu, Alani Akinrinade, Olu Bajowa, Bolaji Akinyemi, Banji Akintoye, and S A J Ibikunle, among others.

Expressing solidarity with affected communities, Afenifere extended condolences to the people of Oyo following an explosion in the state and to the residents of Plateau over attacks by bandits.

The organisation underscored the urgency of revisiting the security architecture of the country to ensure the safety and freedom of Nigerians.

Afenifere recommended empowering states and local government councils to establish their own police services, asserting that such measures could significantly curb the incidents of kidnapping and banditry plaguing the nation.

Afenifere has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to muscle the courage to restructure Nigeria as soon as possible.

The Pan Yoruba organisation lamented on the hardship in the country, free-fall of the Naira, epileptic electricity power supply, cost of petrol and urge the Federal Government to do something as quickly as possible as the situation is becoming unbearable for everyone.
