Security Council:German and French FMs lobbies for ‘two permanent seats for Africa

German and France are rooting are for “two permanent seats in the security council for the African continent”.

The Foreign Ministers of both countries; Annalena Baerbock of German and Catherine Colonna of French have issued a joint state to support Africa.

They said the move will improve Africa’s bilateral relations with other continent on matters of security.

“So Catrina (Catherine Colonna, french foreign minister ed.) and I were underlying that we also as European partners, that I as a German foreign minster, we see that the world in 2023 is not the world after the second world war, therefore we are supporting two permanent seats in the security council also for the African continent. and to intensify our cooperation it is important that we are working together bilaterally but also the continent to continent relations in the name of our people is crucial,” said Baerbock.

Following the ceasefire in the war between Ethiopia and the Tegray region of the country, the two foreign ministers had visited Addis Ababa on Thursday to support the two months peace agreement that ended the conflict in this northern region of the country.

According to the ministers they said that the EU looks forward to seeing Ethiopia put in place a transitional justice mechanism and the block is ready to re-engage the country provided that the ceasefire is respected.

In January, Mozambique joined the non-permanent UN Security Council as the latest African country to do so.
