On a Sunday at the Al Quds mosque in cape town,a heartfelt gathering took place uniting people from diverse background to voice their unwavering support to the Palestine people. The demonstration of solidarity came in the wake of a surprise assault orchestrated by the Palestine group Hamas, which involved gunmen crossing border into Israel, accompanied by a relentless barrage of rocket launched from the Gaza strip. in response, the Israeli government declared war and initiated significant military retaliatory measures.

Moulana Abdul Khaliq Ebrahim Allie, President of the United Ulema Council South Africa, empahized that the issue transceds religious boundaries, stating, “ Recently,we saw how the Zionist act agaings Christians, so it is not only a Muslim issue, it’s a matter of humman rights.it’s a matter of where the rights of otthers are being violated and to the extent where they cannot live freely their religion”

Shaykh Shahid Esau, a former member of the South African parliament,drew parallels between the struggle against apartheid in South Africa and the current conflict,noting,”South Africa liberation movement was also compelled to take up arms to make an impact “, He highlighted the irony countries that once supported South Africa during the apartheid now backing Israel in its conflict with the Palestinian people.

The South Africa government has weighed in on the escalating situation, with the Department of International Relation and Cooperation(DIRCO)issuing a statement calling for an immediate cessation of violation between Israel and Palenstine. The statement expressed “grave concern over the recent devastating escalating in the Israeli-Palestian conflict” and attributed the current crisis to factors including the illegal occupation of Palestinian people.

As conflict continues to exact a heavy toll, with over 1,100 lives lost in Israel and Gaza, the voices of solidarity as heard at the Al Quds mosque gathering,resonate not only in Cape Town but also across the globe.
