Sunday Igboho regains freedom in Benin

Sunday Adeyemo aka Sunday Ighoho , the popular Yoruba Nation agitator was freed by Benin Republic Government.

The Yoruba Nation promoter, Sunday Igboho was released on Monday, March 07, 2022, after spending 231 days in detention.

He was arrested July 19, 2021 while boarding a flight with his wife, Ropo, to Germany.

The information about his release was made known to the public by the umbrella body of Yoruba Self-determination Groups, Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, though the details of his release could not be ascertained before publication.

Maxwell Adeleye, who is the Communications Secretary to Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, said Igboho was released to Professor Banji Akintoye and a French Language Expert/ Deputy Alana of Ilana Omo Oodua Worldwide, Professor Wale Adeniran.

Ighoho’s release has being tagged as a “Triumph of truth over darkness in Yoruba land” by Akintoye, to whom the agitator was released.

Igboho had escaped after his home was raided in Ibadan by the operatives of the Department of State Service on July 1, 2021. It was when he tried to escape with his wife through Benin airport he was arrested. His wife,was later released .

In the raid at Igboho’s Sooka residence, 13 of Igboho’s associates were arrested, while two of Igboho’s supporters, identified as Adogan and Alfa died.

DSS also presented seven AK-47 rifles allegedly recovered during the raid on Igboho’s house on July 1, as well as three pump-action guns, 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines, 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, five cutlasses, one jack-knife, one pen knife, two pistol holsters, a pair of binoculars, a wallet containing $5, local and international driving licences in his name, ATM cards, a German residence permit No. YO2N6K1NY bearing his name, two whistles, 50 cartridges and 18 walkie-talkies.

Following the raid, Igboho went to court to seek redress, of which a State High Court in Oyo State granted judgement in his favour for N20 billion for damages caused on him due to the deadly raid. Accompanying the judgement, the court restrained the Department of State Security and Attorney General of the Federation from arresting and prosecuting Igboho.
