The harmattan season comes with a lot of breeze, dust and dryness; hence one should be careful with what they wear.

Get yourself all covered up in the harmattan. Here are some essentials you will be needing for the season.

  1. Long Sleeves Shirts

    The most important clothing you should own during the harmattan are long sleeve shirts. These shirts cover up your skin preventing dryness and direct exposure to the sun. It is advisable to wear long-sleeved shirts, jackets, blazers, etc. with an inner T-shirt for easy removal when it gets hot.

2. Turtleneck Shirts

     Turtleneck shirts are trending and vary in colours. Wearing one makes you look fashionable and smart with the extra advantage of providing warmth to your neck, this is suitable for the harmattan considering it airy nature.

3. Cardigans and Sweaters

    Aside the rainy season, the harmattan is the best time to keep your cardigans and sweaters handy. If you don’t have any, then you should get one.

When choosing a cardigan or sweater you should take into consideration the colour as black coloured clothing is known foe it heat absorbant.

4. Below the Knee Clothes

    The harmattan season comes with a lot breeze and dust and is advisable to put on clothes that do not expose your body. You should consider wearing pantyhose stockings and trousers.

5. Thick Fabrics

     Silk and nylon clothing should be avoided in this season as they don’t provide the protection during the harmattan.  As such, it is preferable to wear thick fabrics like cotton, wool, velvets, etc, as they absorb moisture and keep you warm. It is your choice  to make these thick fabrics into fashionable styles to provide the fitting and protection you desire.

6. Head Wears

    The scalp is a part of the body that shouldn’t be exposed during this harmattan. Exposing the scalp to dust can cause dandruff and dryness of the scalp. Therefore, the head should be covered with head wears like cap, hoodie and scarf that can be warn in different styles and colours to suit your outfit or fashion style.

7. Socks

     If you are not the type that would like to wear cover shoes, wearing socks with your regular flat shoes or sandals can be an option.

8. Muffler

     A muffler is used around the neck to provide warm, aside from keeping you warm, it also makes you look fashionable.

9. Gloves

     Depending on the intensity of the harmattan, you should consider having a pair of gloves is ideal for the harmattan. This is however more important for kids.

Vaseline or lip bam – Always ensure I keep this handy especially a lip balm. A lip balm or vaseline should be used regularly on the lips to avoid cracks and dryness. The vaseline can also be used for the skin regularly to prevent dryness of the skin.

Eyeglasses or shades – A pair of well-fitting shade would give your eyes adequate protection from sun and dust.

Moisturizer – You should moisturize your feet after washing them using good foot moisturizers, they protect the feet from unattractive cracks. Vaseline could be used.
